On Saturday night two Springfield police officers working an off duty detail found themselves in the middle of a gunfight.
The officers were both working at Aquarius Nightclub at 1217 State St. when there was an incident across the street at a Dunkin.
When the officers arrived at the Dunkin they found a male subject who was struck in the head with a broken bottle and was bleeding.
Another male subject who has been identified as 25-year-old, Kenneth Hernandez approached the officers with his hands behind his back. When given verbal commands to show his hands, Hernandez pulled a pistol from behind his back and began shooting at the officers.
One of the officers, a 20 year veteran with the department was shot twice in the left arm.
Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood says the officer who was taken to Bay State Medical Center, is doing okay and was in good spirits.
The second officer who was able to take cover, has been placed on paid administrative leave.
Hernandez is in custody and police recovered the firearm he used.
