Newport News, VA. Police Officer Killed In The Line Of Duty Was From Hudson, New Hampshire

On Thursday night Officer Katie Thyne of the Newport News, VA. Police Department was killed in the line of duty.

Officer Thyne was at 6:47 p.m. conducting a traffic stop in the 1400 block of 16th Street. She approached the vehicle on the driver side while another officer approached the vehicle on the passenger side.The driver of the vehicle who has been identified as Vernon Green, at some point during the stop accelerated, dragging Officer Thyne for about a block.

Green fled the scene but crashed nearby in the area of 16th Street and Walnut Ave. After a foot chase Green was taken into custody and a passenger in the vehicle who has been identified as Ivy Runnels was also taken into custody.

Green has been charged with felony homicide, evade and elude, and narcotics charges.

Officer Thyne was transported to an area hospital to be treated for multiple injuries however, she later died.

Officer Thyne was 24-years-old, originally from Dracut, MA. and then moved to Hudson, New Hampshire, where she attended Alvirne High School. She served in the Navy and joined the Newport News, VA. Police Department in 2018.

Katie’s service to the community went beyond just being a police officer but she was also a basketball coach at the Boys and Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula.

Katie leaves behind her loving partner, daughter, mother, stepfather and a brother.
