Enrique Gonzalez, 42, of Framingham was a fugitive from justice wanted on a warrant out of Worcester District Court for photographing a child in a sexual manner, and he was also wanted on a warrant out of Worcester Superior Court for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, subsequent offense.

On Friday the State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section (VFAS) had intelligence that Gonzalez was located at the Express Inn on Riverdale Street in West Springfield and that he was armed. VFAS and the State Police Special Tactical Operations Team (STOP) went to the location and just before noon Gonzalez was seen exiting a motel room into the parking lot.

As Gonzalez attempted to enter a motor vehicle in the parking lot, members of STOP approached him and gave him verbal commands to surrender. He refused to follow verbal commands and began to run away along a sidewalk towards the rear of the motel.

While attempting to flee, Gonzalez fired a handgun at the Troopers at which time Troopers returned fire. Gonzalez was shot and after falling to the ground he was secured. Tactical medics from UMass Medical Center in Worcester who are assigned to STOP provided treatment to Gonzalez who was conscious and alert and taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

During this incident no Troopers were injured however because it is a police-involved shooting, Hampden County District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni will oversee the investigation of the State Police Detective Unit for Hampden County.
