On Friday night police officers with the city of Springfield responded to a shotspotter activation on College Street at about 6:50 p.m.
While officers were responding to College Street, a vehicle pulled up to the Emergency Department at Mercy Hospital. Five people exited the vehicle and two males who exited the vehicle had non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Officers who were at the hospital had observed that a male passenger who exited the vehicle had a large bag over his shoulder. Due to the shooting incident on College Street, officers searched the bag and recovered a large amount of cash as well as liquid codeine. The passenger was identified as Raekwon Jackson, 24, of Orange Street in Springfield. Jackson was taken into custody and was charged with intent to distribute a class B drug (liquid codeine).
Officers observed that the trunk of the vehicle was slightly ajar and inside they found another black bag and they recovered from inside the bag, a loaded high capacity semi-automatic firearm.
The operator of the vehicle was identified as Daysia Fowler, 24, of Liberty Street in Springfield and she was taken into custody. Fowler was charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, possession of a high capacity magazine and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Another person who had been shot was taken to Baystate and he succumbed to his injuries.
At this time, what is believed to have happened in this shooting incident is that an individual or individuals approached a large gathering from Maynard St towards the backyard of the home on College St. As the individual or individuals approached the home, they began shooting and an individual or individuals returned fire.
In this incident two locations became crime scenes. The home on College St. where the shooting incident happened and then at Mercy Hospital where two gunshot victims were dropped off and where officers arrested two individuals.
